An app blocker can work well at one job: changing whether a chosen app is available at the moment you would usually open it. That can interrupt a reflexive visit to a feed, game, news app, or shopping app before it turns into an unplanned session.
But “does it work?” usually hides three different questions. Can the tool technically restrict access? Does that change the way you use your phone? And does that change produce the outcome you care about? Those are related, but they are not the same result.
A blocker cannot guarantee focus, sleep, happiness, or a different relationship with technology. It can give a specific behavior a different default. Whether that helps depends on the app you block, the rule you choose, and whether the rule still fits real life.
The research is promising, not a universal verdict. A 2023 multimethod study of apps intended to reduce mobile-phone use found that app-based management has potential, while also calling for stronger evaluation of these interventions. It identified features such as app limits, grayscale, and mixed approaches among the strategies associated with lower use in the evidence it reviewed.
A separate randomized study of 305 adolescents using Android phones found that a focus function which hid nonessential apps was associated with lower problematic-smartphone-use scores and lower recorded use frequency. The effects were small, and the participants, platform, and intervention are not the same thing as every iPhone blocker or every adult user.
That is the useful level of certainty: restrictions and friction can help some people change a specific behavior. The research does not prove that every blocker works for everyone, or that blocking an app automatically improves every part of life.
The most common problem is not that the block technically failed. It is that the rule did not fit the situation. A person blocks an app they genuinely need for work, messages, travel, or a group. The first urgent moment arrives, the setup becomes impractical, and the whole rule is removed.
Another problem is an easy override. If extending a limit, pausing a session, or changing a setting becomes part of the same routine as opening the app, the tool is still asking you to make the difficult decision in the most tempting moment.
Substitution matters too. Blocking TikTok may send you to Reels, Shorts, Reddit, a browser, or another device. That does not mean the block was pointless. It means the behavior is broader than one app, and the next boundary needs to reflect that.

Apple's Screen Time includes App Limits, scheduled Downtime, and Always Allowed apps and contacts. Apple also notes that standard Screen Time limits can be ignored once reached, while scheduled Downtime can be configured to block restricted apps. That does not make one approach universally better; they solve different problems.
1. Choose a behavior, not a vague goal. “Use my phone less” is difficult to test. “Stop opening Instagram during work blocks” or “stop checking news in bed” is specific enough to notice.
2. Pick the smallest useful boundary. Block the apps behind that behavior, not everything that might be distracting. Keep the practical apps you need available.
3. Notice what breaks the setup. Did you need an app for a legitimate task? Did you seek the same behavior elsewhere? Did a notification, a boring moment, or a certain time of day trigger the urge?
4. Adjust the rule instead of declaring failure. Move a necessary workflow elsewhere, add another app to the boundary, switch to a schedule, or decide that a blocker is not the right tool for this problem. The result is useful information either way.

Research on app-based phone-use interventions is promising but mixed. A blocker may reduce access to the apps you select, but it does not guarantee less overall phone use or a specific wellbeing outcome.
Common reasons include an easy override, blocking too many useful apps, using the wrong mechanism for the problem, or moving the same behavior to another app or device.
It can be enough when you want reports, daily app limits, scheduled Downtime, or broad settings. A selected-app blocker is a different option when a few specific apps need to start unavailable by default.
No ordinary iPhone app can honestly promise that. A blocker can remove convenient in-the-moment overrides, but the device owner still has system-level options.
