The setup takes less time
than one context switch.

Pick the apps that break a deep work block, start a session before you begin, and set it to the length you need. This page is the setup guide; for the research behind why deep work needs protection at all, see our deep work app blocker page.

A deep work block only works if it's actually enforced, not just intended. Fella does not have a feature named for deep work. It has sessions and routines, the same mechanism behind every Fella block, applied to a longer, more deliberate stretch of focused time. This page walks through setting that up; the case for why it matters lives on our deep work app blocker page.

Set it up before you sit down, not after

Choose the apps that actually break a deep work stretch. Usually a small list: social feeds, messaging, email, whatever you reflexively check between thoughts. Leave tools you need for the work itself untouched.

Start a manual session before you begin, set to the length of the block. An hour, two hours, or the whole morning all work the same way—the selected apps stay locked until the session ends, with nothing left to enforce mid-session.

Same block, same time, every day

If deep work happens at a consistent time, a routine starts and ends the session automatically instead of requiring a manual start every morning. That matters most on the days motivation is lowest, which are exactly the days a manual step gets skipped.

Routines can run on specific days only, so a weekday-morning deep work block and a lighter weekend schedule can coexist without conflicting. See how Fella routines work for the full mechanism.

One way through, not an open door

A deep work block that has no exit at all isn't realistic. Each session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, enough for something that genuinely can't wait, without reopening the door to a full return to the apps you just blocked. When the five minutes end, the block resumes automatically for the rest of the session.

The case for blocking instead of just intending to focus

Knowledge workers switch tasks roughly every three minutes on average, and a single interruption can cost over 20 minutes of full refocus. Our deep work app blocker page covers that research in depth, along with where a session-based blocker fits against a Pomodoro timer or a plain focus mode.

Fella, up close.

  • Built with Apple’s Screen Time controls.
  • One 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
  • Apps stay blocked by default.
