Use Screen Time for a scheduled news window, or an iPhone app blocker that locks BBC News outside the hours you choose, so a breaking-news alert can't keep pulling you back all day.

For a lot of people, the right fix here isn't an all-day block, it's a scheduled window. Use Screen Time Downtime to keep BBC News available at specific times, or a Fella routine that locks the app outside your chosen reading window. That way a breaking-news notification can't pull you back in at any hour, but you're not cut off from news entirely either.
A breaking-news alert is a specifically effective trigger. It arrives unannounced, claims urgency, and offers no way to judge how significant the story actually is without opening the app. Unlike a habit that builds gradually, this one restarts itself every time a new alert lands, which can mean reopening the app many times across a single day.
1. Open Settings, then tap Screen Time. Tap Downtime, choose Scheduled, and set the hours you want BBC News restricted, leaving a specific window, morning and evening, for instance, where it stays available.
2. Turn on Block at Downtime for a real scheduled block. Apple lets Downtime show a reminder by default; with Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps cannot open outside your chosen window.
3. Consider an App Limit instead if a window feels too rigid. Open Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit and set a daily allowance for BBC News. An App Limit can be ignored by default, though, so it's a softer boundary than a scheduled window.
A blocker doesn't stop the alert from arriving, only from being acted on immediately. If breaking-news notifications are the specific trigger, muting or adjusting them separately in iOS Settings addresses the prompt directly, alongside any scheduled block on the app itself.
Do not confuse an override with a failed limit. If you see an Ignore Limit option, the limit has triggered as designed. It is an expected iPhone override, not proof the app was never restricted. See how to stop ignoring Screen Time limits if that override has become automatic for you.
Decide honestly whether any news is genuinely time-sensitive for you. For most personal use, checking twice a day covers nearly everything that matters, which is the reasoning behind a scheduled window rather than constant access.
A scheduled window suits someone who wants to stay informed but not on the app's schedule. You choose when to check in; BBC News stays unavailable the rest of the time, so a notification can't override your own timing.
An all-day default block suits someone for whom any news checking is disruptive. If even a scheduled window still gets reopened compulsively, removing the app entirely during your day, with a short emergency unlock for a genuine need, is the more effective boundary.
Focus Mode is not a BBC News blocker either way. It can silence notifications, but it doesn't stop the app from opening manually.
| Approach | Good for | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| Delete BBC News | Removes immediate access on this iPhone. | All-or-nothing; doesn't allow for even a scheduled check-in. |
| Screen Time App Limit | Basic awareness of total time. | Can be ignored by default, and doesn't stop a notification from prompting a check outside a window. |
| Fella (scheduled routine) | Locking BBC News outside a chosen reading window, unlocked during it. | Built for one 5-minute emergency unlock per session, not open-ended access. |
A dedicated blocker is useful when breaking-news notifications keep overriding your own intended news schedule. A routine that locks BBC News outside your chosen window removes the option to react to every alert immediately, while still leaving real time to catch up. If you are still choosing a tool, see our iPhone app-blocking options.
With Fella, add BBC News to a routine timed to your preferred reading windows. It stays unavailable outside those hours, so a notification landing at the wrong time simply can't be acted on until your next window.
Use the emergency unlock for a genuinely significant story. Each blocking session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, enough time to confirm something real is happening outside your scheduled window.
That is the trade-off. Fella provides a scheduled boundary you plan around your own reading habits, not an all-or-nothing block unless you choose to set it up that way.
People who reopen BBC News every time a notification lands, regardless of what else they're doing. If a breaking-news alert reliably interrupts your day, a scheduled window puts that decision back in your hands.
People who still want to stay reasonably informed. Choosing one or two windows a day, rather than an all-day block, keeps real access without constant interruption.
People for whom even a scheduled window isn't enough. If checking during the window still becomes compulsive, an all-day default block with a short emergency unlock is the stronger option.
Schedule a specific reading window using Screen Time Downtime or a Fella routine, so BBC News stays available at set times each day while remaining unavailable the rest of the time, rather than blocking it around the clock.
Breaking-news notifications can arrive at any time and pull you back in repeatedly throughout the day. A scheduled window lets you check in deliberately once or twice a day instead, without either leaving the app open all day or cutting off news access entirely.
No. A blocker restricts opening the app; it doesn't control whether push notifications arrive. If a breaking-news alert is what keeps pulling you back, notifications need to be turned off separately in iOS Settings.
No. Fella blocks access to the app on your iPhone. Your saved articles and settings are untouched, and you can still reach them during your one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
Yes. Use App Limits for a daily allowance, or Downtime for scheduled hours. A reached App Limit can be ignored by default. Fella is a narrower blocker with one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
No. Hiding an app changes where its icon appears, and muting notifications removes alerts. You can still open BBC News from Search or the App Library unless you use an App Limit, Downtime, or an app blocker.
