The pause between problems
shouldn’t default to a check.

Glancing at a blocked app between problems has nothing to check, so the reflex has nothing to complete. That's a different fix than resisting the urge each time it shows up.

Studying is full of natural pauses, between problems, at the end of a paragraph, while working through something difficult, and a checking habit fills every one of them automatically. The check itself might only take a few seconds, but what it costs isn't the seconds, it's the concentration that took a while to build and now has to be rebuilt from nothing.

Why a five-second check costs more than five seconds

Research on task switching consistently finds that a real interruption costs over 20 minutes of full refocus time, even when the interruption itself was brief. A quick glance at a phone between problems isn't free just because it's short; it resets the concentration that took real effort to build.

Remove the option, not just the visibility

Select the specific apps behind the checking habit, then start a session before you sit down to study, or build a routine for the days and hours you study regularly. There's nothing to glance at during a pause because the app won't open.

This beats phone-face-down or phone-in-a-drawer advice because the habit isn't purely triggered by seeing the screen light up. A phone within reach still gets picked up out of habit; a blocked app can't complete the loop even when the phone is right there.

Still reachable for anything real

Leave notes, messaging you rely on, and any study apps unselected. For the rare case a blocked app genuinely needs checking, each session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, then it locks again automatically.

If it's a longer session, not a quick reflex

If the pattern is losing whole study blocks, not just a quick glance, see our broader block apps while studying page, backed by the research on phone use and GPA. For the work-hours version of the same reflex, see stop checking your phone while working.
