The check happens
before you've decided to check.

Glancing at a blocked app during a pause in work has nothing to check, so the reflex has nothing to complete. That's a different fix than muting notifications or trying to notice the urge in the moment.

The reflex check during work rarely starts with a notification. It starts with a pause, between finishing one step and starting the next, and the phone fills that pause automatically. That makes it a different problem from deciding to spend twenty minutes on social media. It's shorter, more frequent, and it happens whether or not anything is actually waiting, which is exactly why willpower alone struggles against it.

Why the check happens without a reason

A habit loop doesn't need new information to fire. Once checking a phone between tasks becomes automatic, the trigger is the pause itself, not a notification. That's why silencing alerts only solves half the problem: a silent phone still gets picked up out of habit.

Remove the option, not just the alert

Select the specific apps behind the reflex check, usually a small handful, and start a session for your working hours, manually or on a routine. There's nothing to glance at during a pause because the app simply won't open.

This works because the habit loop needs a completed action to reinforce itself. A blocked app can't complete that loop, so each pause during work stops feeding the habit instead of strengthening it.

Still reachable for anything real

Leave email, calendar, and any genuine work tools you rely on unselected. For the rare case a blocked app genuinely needs checking, each session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, then it locks again automatically.

If it's a longer session, not a quick reflex

If the pattern is less about a quick glance and more about losing extended stretches of work time, see our block apps during work page, which covers that broader pattern with the research behind it. For the study-time version of the same reflex, see stop checking your phone while studying.
