How to block Yahoo News
on iPhone

Use Screen Time for a basic limit, Downtime for scheduled hours, or an iPhone app blocker if the real problem is reopening Yahoo News many times a day rather than one long session, without deleting the app.

You can block Yahoo News on iPhone without deleting the app. Use Screen Time App Limits for a daily allowance, Downtime for a scheduled block, or a dedicated blocker when the habit is reopening it, not staying in it. Each method restricts access differently, so pick the one that matches what's actually happening.

Yahoo News's problem usually isn't one long session, it's how many times a day you open it. A constantly refreshed mix of headlines and trending stories means there's no point where you feel caught up, so a quick check turns into ten or fifteen separate check-ins spread across the day. A daily time limit can be used up in short bursts and says nothing about that pattern.

Use Screen Time to limit Yahoo News

1. Open Settings, then tap Screen Time. If needed, turn on App & Website Activity. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.

2. Select Yahoo News. Open the News category, select Yahoo News, tap Next, choose the daily allowance, then tap Done. Selecting the app on its own avoids sharing a limit with other apps you still need.

3. Watch how the limit gets used. A 15-minute allowance spent in ten 90-second check-ins throughout the day never triggers the limit screen the way one long session would. iPhone shows a Screen Time limit screen once the allowance is gone, but an App Limit can be ignored by default.

If Yahoo News still opens, check this first

Check that the App Limit applies to Yahoo News itself. Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, tap the rule, and confirm Yahoo News is selected and the days are correct. A category limit can behave differently from a limit on one specific app.

Do not confuse an override with a failed limit. If you see an Ignore Limit option, the limit has triggered as designed. See how to stop ignoring Screen Time limits if tapping through has become automatic.

Count check-ins, not minutes. If you open Yahoo News more than a handful of separate times a day, the fix is reducing how often you can open it, not how long each visit lasts.

Use Downtime for scheduled blocks

Downtime blocks most apps during a scheduled period. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime, choose Scheduled, and set the days and hours. This is a better match than an App Limit for a repeated check-in habit, since it removes the app entirely during the hours you keep reaching for it, rather than measuring total minutes.

Turn on Block at Downtime for a real scheduled block. Apple lets Downtime show a reminder by default; with Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps cannot open during that period. Apps in Always Allowed remain available, so review that list if Yahoo News is not behaving as expected.

Focus Mode does not stop Yahoo News from opening. It can reduce notifications and visual cues, but it does not block the app itself.

Approach Good for Weak point
Delete Yahoo News Removes immediate access on this iPhone. Loses your account setup and followed topics.
Screen Time app limit Basic limits and awareness. Measures total time, not the number of times you reopen the app, and you can choose Ignore Limit.
Fella Blocking Yahoo News by default between windows. Built for one 5-minute emergency unlock per session, not open-ended checking.

When a dedicated Yahoo News blocker makes sense

A dedicated blocker is useful when the habit is frequency, not duration. Because each check-in is short, a daily time limit rarely triggers before the pattern repeats again. A default-off rule removes the option to open the app between the windows you choose, which addresses the repeated reopening directly. If you're still comparing options, see our iPhone app-blocking options.

With Fella, add Yahoo News to the apps you want blocked. It stays unavailable by default while the apps you did not select remain accessible.

Use the emergency unlock only for a specific need. Each blocking session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, enough time for a genuine headline check. When the five minutes end, Yahoo News locks again automatically.

That is the trade-off. Fella is for stronger friction against the reopening habit itself, not flexible daily minutes.

Who this is for

People who open Yahoo News many times a day for short checks. If your Screen Time report shows a low average session length but a high number of opens, that's the pattern Fella is built to interrupt.

People who still want a real news check sometimes. The emergency unlock gives you a window to do that without leaving the app reachable all day.

People who've already tried app limits. If "Ignore Limit" became a habit of its own, or the limit never triggers because each visit is too short, a harder default is the next step.
