The break was supposed to
end the break, not the session.

A study break into a news feed rarely stays short, and the mood it leaves behind follows you back to the desk. Block the apps that turn breaks into spirals, and the break stays a break.

A study break is a natural moment to open a news app "just for a minute," and negative content is specifically built to keep that minute from ending. This isn't the same as general study distraction. Doomscrolling pulls harder than a neutral break would, and it tends to leave a worse mood behind, which makes the return to studying harder than the interruption alone would explain.

Why the break, and the mood, don't end on time

"I've earned a break" is a reasonable thought that stops applying once the intended five minutes are up, but a doomscroll feed doesn't announce a natural stopping point. Negative or alarming content also carries a mood cost, research links it to worse mood and higher anxiety afterward, which can make settling back into focused work harder than a neutral break would.

Block the apps, keep the break

Select the news and social apps that usually start the spiral and build a routine for the hours you study, or start a manual session if the schedule varies. Breaks are still worth taking; they just don't need to run through those specific apps.

Still reachable for anything real

Leave notes, messaging you rely on, and any study apps unselected. For the rare case a blocked app genuinely needs checking, each session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, then it locks again automatically.
