Not every app.
Just the ones actually costing you.

A narrower block, aimed at the two or three apps that actually eat the workday, tends to hold better than an all-or-nothing rule against the whole phone. Set it once as a routine and the reduction runs itself.

A hard rule against the whole phone sounds decisive, but it tends to collapse the first time it's broken, because breaking an all-or-nothing rule feels like the rule already failed. A narrower reduction works differently. Pick the specific apps actually costing you time, block just those, and there's less to break and less reason to abandon the whole effort after one slip.

Why narrow tends to beat total

An all-or-nothing rule has one failure state: broken. The moment it's broken once, there's often nothing left distinguishing a small slip from giving up entirely. A narrower reduction, targeting the specific apps doing the most damage, doesn't have that cliff edge; using an app you never restricted in the first place isn't a failure of anything.

Decide the reduction once, not every morning

Select the apps that account for the most time relative to what they add during work, usually one or two categories rather than the whole phone. Build a routine for your working hours, and that single decision holds without needing to be remade every day.

A reduction, not a lockdown

Each session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, which matters more for a reduction approach than a hard one: it means a genuine need doesn't have to feel like the whole effort failed. The apps lock again automatically once the five minutes end.

If you're ready for a harder line

If a narrower reduction isn't cutting it and the pattern needs a firmer boundary, see our block apps during work page, which covers a fuller, stats-backed case for a stricter default block. For the checking-reflex version of the same problem, see stop checking your phone while working.
