Before blocking Duolingo, check whether you actually need to. For most people it's a useful daily habit; blocking makes sense only for streak-checking or practice that's displacing something else.

Start with the honest question: does Duolingo actually need blocking? It's a learning app, and consistent daily use is usually the point, not the problem. If you're here because you want to build the habit, not curb it, Screen Time and app blockers aren't the tool you need.
Blocking makes sense in a narrower set of cases. Compulsive streak-checking, opening the app repeatedly just to confirm the streak is safe rather than to practice, over-practicing that eats into work or sleep, or a general pattern of reaching for Duolingo as a distraction rather than intentional study. If that's your situation, here's how to restrict it without losing your account or progress.
1. Open Settings, then tap Screen Time. If needed, turn on App & Website Activity. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
2. Select Duolingo, and size the allowance to a real lesson, not zero. Choose the app, tap Next, set a daily allowance that covers a normal practice session, then tap Done. The goal is usually capping over-practice, not preventing practice altogether.
3. Know what the limit actually does. iPhone shows a Screen Time limit screen once the allowance is used, but an App Limit can be ignored by default, and it doesn't distinguish streak-anxiety check-ins from genuine lesson time.
Check that the App Limit applies to Duolingo itself. Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, tap the rule, and confirm Duolingo is selected and the days are correct.
Do not confuse an override with a failed limit. If you see an Ignore Limit option, the limit triggered as designed. See how to stop ignoring Screen Time limits if tapping through has become automatic.
Separate check-ins from practice. If your Screen Time report shows many short opens rather than one lesson-length session, that's streak-checking, not learning, and it's the specific thing worth restricting.
Downtime blocks most apps during a scheduled period. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime, choose Scheduled, and set the days and hours. This suits Duolingo better than a flat daily cap when the actual problem is timing, like practicing late at night instead of sleeping.
Turn on Block at Downtime for a real scheduled block. Apple lets Downtime show a reminder by default; with Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps cannot open during that period. Apps in Always Allowed remain available, so review that list if Duolingo is not behaving as expected.
A blocker with routines automates this without manual setup each time. Fella's routines can start and end blocking sessions automatically on the days and times you choose, so Duolingo locks during work or sleep hours and reopens on its own the rest of the day for normal practice.
| Approach | Good for | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| Delete Duolingo | Removes immediate access on this iPhone. | Loses your streak and progress, and removes a habit that's likely genuinely useful. |
| Screen Time app limit | Capping over-practice or excessive check-ins. | A flat daily cap doesn't distinguish a real lesson from a streak-anxiety check-in, and you can choose Ignore Limit. |
| Fella (scheduled routine) | Blocking Duolingo during specific hours, like work or sleep, automatically. | Built for one 5-minute emergency unlock per session, not open-ended access during the blocked window. |
A scheduled block fits Duolingo better than an all-day restriction in almost every case. Since the app is genuinely useful most of the time, the goal is usually keeping it out of a specific window, work hours, bedtime, a focus session, not preventing practice altogether. If you're still comparing options, see our iPhone app-blocking options.
With Fella, add Duolingo to a routine tied to the hours you're protecting. It blocks automatically when the session starts and reopens automatically when it ends, so your normal daily practice isn't affected outside that window.
Use the emergency unlock only for a genuine need. Each blocking session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, enough time to finish a lesson that can't wait. When the five minutes end, Duolingo locks again automatically.
Not for most Duolingo users. If you open it once a day for a normal lesson, that's the app working as intended. Nothing on this page needs to apply to you.
For people checking the streak more than they're practicing. If most opens are short, anxious check-ins rather than lessons, restricting access during specific hours can break that pattern without losing the streak or the habit.
For people whose Duolingo time is displacing something else. Late-night sessions eating into sleep, or check-ins during a focus block at work, are the clearest cases for a scheduled block.
For most people, no. Duolingo is a learning app that rewards daily use, and blocking it outright removes the habit you're trying to build. Blocking makes sense only if the pattern is compulsive streak-checking, over-practicing that displaces other tasks, or opening it during hours you're trying to protect, like work or sleep.
Use Screen Time App Limits for a daily allowance, Downtime for a scheduled block during specific hours, or a focused app blocker like Fella to keep Duolingo blocked by default during a chosen window, with one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
Duolingo's streak system is built to create a daily return habit, which is often genuinely useful for learning, but can tip into checking the app purely out of streak anxiety rather than to practice. That's a narrower problem than the app itself, and it's worth distinguishing from ordinary daily use.
No. Fella only blocks access to the app on your iPhone during the window you set. It doesn't touch your account, streak, or lesson progress, and you can still reach the app during your one 5-minute emergency unlock per session if you need to complete a lesson.
Yes. Fella's routines can start and end blocking sessions automatically on the days and times you choose, so Duolingo can be blocked during work or sleep hours and fully available the rest of the day for your normal practice.
