Use Screen Time for a basic limit, Downtime for scheduled access, or an iPhone app blocker when the Tumblr dashboard's endless scroll needs a real stopping point, without deleting your blog.

You can block Tumblr on iPhone without deleting your blog. Use Screen Time App Limits for a daily allowance, Downtime for a scheduled block, or a dedicated blocker when Tumblr needs to stay unavailable by default. Each method restricts access differently, so choose the smallest one that closes the loophole you actually have.
The Tumblr dashboard is a reblog-driven feed with no built-in session end point. Unlike an app organized around discrete posts or stories, following niche blogs and fandom communities means new content keeps appearing indefinitely, which makes "just a quick check" easy to lose track of.
1. Open Settings, then tap Screen Time. If needed, turn on App & Website Activity. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
2. Select Tumblr. Open the Social Networking category, select Tumblr, tap Next, choose the daily allowance, then tap Done. Selecting Tumblr on its own avoids sharing a limit with other social apps you still need.
3. Know what happens when the limit is reached. iPhone shows a Screen Time limit screen, but an App Limit can be ignored by default. That matters on a dashboard-style feed, where there's no natural "end of content" moment to prompt you to stop on your own.
Check that the App Limit applies to Tumblr itself. Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, tap the rule, and confirm Tumblr is selected and the days are correct. A category limit can behave differently from a limit on one specific app.
Do not confuse an override with a failed limit. If you see an Ignore Limit option, the limit has triggered as designed. It is an expected iPhone override, not proof the app was never restricted. See how to stop ignoring Screen Time limits if that override has become automatic for you.
Check the workaround you are actually using. Muting notifications or hiding an icon doesn't block Tumblr. Blocking the app also doesn't block tumblr.com in Safari, a separate boundary if browser access is your usual fallback.
Downtime blocks most apps during a scheduled period. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime, choose Scheduled, and set the days and hours. This works well for a study block, workday, or late-night wind-down, exactly when an endless dashboard scroll is most likely to run long.
Turn on Block at Downtime for a real scheduled block. Apple lets Downtime show a reminder by default; with Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps cannot open during that period. Apps in Always Allowed can remain available, so review that list if Tumblr is not behaving as expected.
Focus Mode is not a Tumblr blocker. Focus can silence notifications and reduce visual cues; it does not stop you opening Tumblr directly.
| Approach | Good for | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| Delete Tumblr | Removes immediate access on this iPhone. | Loses your blog setup and can be impractical if you post regularly. |
| Screen Time app limit | Basic limits and awareness. | You can choose Ignore Limit, especially with no natural stopping point in the dashboard itself. |
| Fella | Blocking Tumblr by default. | Built for one 5-minute emergency unlock per session, not open-ended access. |
A dedicated blocker is useful when a five-minute check on the dashboard reliably turns into much longer. Because Tumblr's reblog-driven feed has no built-in endpoint, a default-off rule doesn't rely on the app ever giving you a natural reason to stop. If you are still choosing a tool, see our iPhone app-blocking options.
With Fella, add Tumblr to the apps you want blocked. It stays unavailable by default while the apps you did not select remain accessible.
Use the emergency unlock only for a practical need. Each blocking session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock, for posting something specific or checking a message. When the five minutes end, Tumblr locks again automatically.
That is the trade-off. Fella is for stronger friction, not flexible schedules, content filtering, or a way to post to your blog while staying blocked from scrolling the dashboard.
People who lose track of time on the dashboard because there's no clear stopping point. If a quick check regularly becomes an hour, that's the pattern Fella is built to interrupt.
People who still post to their own blog. The emergency unlock gives you a window to publish or check messages without leaving the dashboard open and reachable all day.
People who've already tried app limits. If "Ignore Limit" became a habit of its own, a harder default is the next step.
Use Screen Time App Limits for a daily allowance, Downtime for scheduled hours, or a focused app blocker like Fella to keep Tumblr blocked by default with one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
No. Fella blocks access to the app on your iPhone. Your blog, posts, and follows are untouched, and you can still reach them during your one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
No. An app blocker applies to the Tumblr app. Tumblr in Safari is a separate website boundary, and it needs its own restriction if browsing the dashboard through a browser is your usual workaround.
Yes. Use App Limits for a daily allowance, or Downtime for scheduled hours. A reached App Limit can be ignored by default. Fella is a narrower blocker with one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
Yes. You choose which apps Fella blocks. Tumblr can be on your list while other apps you rely on stay fully accessible.
No. Hiding an app changes where its icon appears, and muting notifications removes alerts. You can still open Tumblr from Search or the App Library unless you use an App Limit, Downtime, or an app blocker.
Delete the app, then go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Installing Apps and set it to Don't Allow. This blocks new App Store installs system-wide, including Tumblr, until you turn it back on with your Screen Time passcode.
