Use Screen Time for a basic limit, Downtime for scheduled access, or an iPhone app blocker when 9GAG's meme feed turns a two-minute break into much longer, without deleting your account.

You can block 9GAG on iPhone without deleting your account. Use Screen Time App Limits for a daily allowance, Downtime for a scheduled block, or a dedicated blocker when 9GAG needs to stay unavailable by default. Each method restricts access differently, so choose the smallest one that closes the loophole you actually have.
9GAG is built entirely around the meme scroll. Unlike an app organized around friends, following, or a specific purpose, its feed is a continuous stream of short, self-contained content with no natural conclusion, which makes it easy to open for "one minute" and lose track of how long you've actually been scrolling.
1. Open Settings, then tap Screen Time. If needed, turn on App & Website Activity. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
2. Select 9GAG. Open the Entertainment or Social Networking category, select 9GAG, tap Next, choose the daily allowance, then tap Done. Selecting 9GAG on its own avoids sharing a limit with other apps you still need.
3. Know what happens when the limit is reached. iPhone shows a Screen Time limit screen, but an App Limit can be ignored by default. That's an easy override to dismiss on a quick-hit meme feed, since each individual post takes seconds and never feels like the reason you're running late.
Check that the App Limit applies to 9GAG itself. Open Settings > Screen Time > App Limits, tap the rule, and confirm 9GAG is selected and the days are correct. A category limit can behave differently from a limit on one specific app.
Do not confuse an override with a failed limit. If you see an Ignore Limit option, the limit has triggered as designed. It is an expected iPhone override, not proof the app was never restricted. See how to stop ignoring Screen Time limits if that override has become automatic for you.
Check the workaround you are actually using. Muting notifications or hiding an icon doesn't block 9GAG. Blocking the app also doesn't block 9gag.com in Safari, a separate boundary if browser access is your usual fallback.
Downtime blocks most apps during a scheduled period. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Downtime, choose Scheduled, and set the days and hours. This works well for a work block or before bed, exactly when a continuous meme feed with no logical endpoint is most likely to run long.
Turn on Block at Downtime for a real scheduled block. Apple lets Downtime show a reminder by default; with Block at Downtime enabled, restricted apps cannot open during that period. Apps in Always Allowed can remain available, so review that list if 9GAG is not behaving as expected.
Focus Mode is not a 9GAG blocker. Focus can silence notifications and reduce visual cues; it does not stop you opening 9GAG directly.
| Approach | Good for | Weak point |
|---|---|---|
| Delete 9GAG | Removes immediate access on this iPhone. | Loses your account setup and can feel drastic for an occasional-use app. |
| Screen Time app limit | Basic limits and awareness. | You can choose Ignore Limit, especially since each individual post is quick and easy to justify "one more." |
| Fella | Blocking 9GAG by default. | Built for one 5-minute emergency unlock per session, not open-ended access. |
A dedicated blocker is useful when a quick meme check reliably turns into a much longer scroll. Because 9GAG's feed has no natural stopping point and each post is a low-effort commitment, a default-off rule doesn't rely on the app ever giving you a reason to close it yourself. If you are still choosing a tool, see our iPhone app-blocking options.
With Fella, add 9GAG to the apps you want blocked. It stays unavailable by default while the apps you did not select remain accessible.
Use the emergency unlock only for a practical need. Each blocking session includes one 5-minute emergency unlock. When the five minutes end, 9GAG locks again automatically.
That is the trade-off. Fella is for stronger friction, not flexible schedules, content filtering, or a way to check specific saved posts while staying blocked from the main feed.
People who open 9GAG for a quick laugh and lose track of time. If a two-minute break regularly becomes twenty, that's the pattern Fella is built to interrupt.
People who occasionally want to check a specific saved post. The emergency unlock gives you a window to find something specific without leaving the app open and reachable all day.
People who've already tried app limits. If "Ignore Limit" became a habit of its own, a harder default is the next step.
Use Screen Time App Limits for a daily allowance, Downtime for scheduled hours, or a focused app blocker like Fella to keep 9GAG blocked by default with one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
No. Fella blocks access to the app on your iPhone. Your account and saved content are untouched, and you can still reach them during your one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
No. An app blocker applies to the 9GAG app. 9GAG in Safari is a separate website boundary, and it needs its own restriction if browsing there is your usual workaround.
Yes. Use App Limits for a daily allowance, or Downtime for scheduled hours. A reached App Limit can be ignored by default. Fella is a narrower blocker with one 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
Yes. You choose which apps Fella blocks. 9GAG can be on your list while other apps you rely on stay fully accessible.
No. Hiding an app changes where its icon appears, and muting notifications removes alerts. You can still open 9GAG from Search or the App Library unless you use an App Limit, Downtime, or an app blocker.
Delete the app, then go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Installing Apps and set it to Don't Allow. This blocks new App Store installs system-wide, including 9GAG, until you turn it back on with your Screen Time passcode.
