Silencing a notification
isn’t the same as blocking the app.

Do Not Disturb stops alerts from reaching you. It does nothing about you reaching for the app on your own. Those are two different problems, and most distraction is the second one.

Do Not Disturb is often the first thing people try, and it genuinely works for what it's built for: it just isn't built for the thing most people are actually fighting. The distraction that ends a focus session usually isn't a notification arriving, it's deciding to open the app yourself, out of habit, boredom, or a stray thought. DND has no answer for that, because it was never designed to.

What Do Not Disturb actually does

DND silences calls, alerts, and notification banners. It's genuinely effective at removing the pull of an incoming notification, the buzz that makes you check your phone even when you weren't planning to. For that specific problem, interruption from the outside, it works well and costs nothing.

What it doesn't do is stop an app from opening. Every app on the phone remains fully usable with DND on. If the pattern is picking up the phone on your own rather than reacting to a buzz, DND has nothing to say about it.

Why they're worth running together

DND and Fella intervene at different points. DND stops something from reaching you; Fella stops you from reaching for something. During a real focus block, both problems show up, so running Do Not Disturb alongside a Fella session covers more ground than relying on either alone.

Where Fella fits

Select the apps you tend to open without deciding to, then start a session manually or let a routine start one automatically. Selected apps genuinely can't be opened for the length of the session, not just muted, with one 5-minute emergency unlock for something real.

Fella, up close.

  • Built with Apple’s Screen Time controls.
  • One 5-minute emergency unlock per session.
  • Apps stay blocked by default.

Everything you need to stay focused, right from Home.
