The study most often cited is Ward and colleagues (2017), who ran two experiments on available cognitive capacity.
In both, people completed tasks that tax attention and working memory while their phones were placed on the desk, in a pocket or bag, or in another room. Participants were told not to think about their phones and not to look at them. Capacity was lower when the phone was nearby, and highest when the phone was in another room.
The effect held even though phones were silent and untouched, which is why the paper was interpreted as a “brain drain” from mere presence rather than from interruptions. The authors framed this as a cost to the resources you have available to focus, not as proof that you will always perform worse on every real task with a phone nearby.
Skowronek and colleagues (2023) reported a converging pattern on a different measure. They found that smartphone presence reduced basal attention — a low-level, sustained-attention capacity — which fits the idea that a nearby device can occupy background resources without an explicit interruption.
These are the strongest cases for a proximity cost, and they help explain why moving a phone farther away can sometimes make work feel less fragmented.
