Physical books and e-readers beside the phone. The book is not on the iPhone at all, yet the phone stays within reach. A Fella session keeps Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, X, YouTube, or games behind the shield whilst the paper book or Kindle device stays open. Useful when the distraction is not the reading app itself but the apps around it.
Kindle, Apple Books, Libby, and other reading apps on iPhone. Leave the chosen reader unselected so it remains available, and block the surrounding distractors. Fella does not read inside the reader — no highlights, notes, or progress sync — it only restricts access to the other selected apps you chose via the system picker.
Articles, newsletters, and research in Safari or apps. Long-form pieces often live inside a browser or a single app you need. If that browser reading app must stay open, leave it unblocked and block the social and video apps that pull you sideways. If the browser itself is the trap — infinite new tabs — block it during the reading routine and use a separate reading app instead.
Studying: textbooks, PDFs, and course materials. Timed manual sessions fit a study block — 60 or 120 minutes of shielded reading before a break. For exam weeks, a daily routine that covers the same study window repeats the boundary without remembering to start it. See blocking apps whilst studying.
Long-form reading that needs continuity. Essays, reports, and nonfiction where holding the argument across pages matters. Two uninterrupted sessions of 40 minutes often beat a nominal hour with three “quick checks.” Fella keeps the apps that break that thread unavailable for the session you set.
